Syncing Calendars

Two weeks ago my wife received an iPhone as a gift from my folks. Now that my wife has essentially entered the smartphone realm of mobile phones, it was time that she takes advantage of having the features and a data plan.

My wife set up her e-mails with no problem. The iPhone has a lot of built-in connectors to the popular web-based e-mail systems. However, web-based calendar systems seem to be... less popular. Personally, I find Google Calendar to be the best solution out there, as it has support for multiple calendars, a great AJAX interface, and the ability to connect and sync your Google Calendars to both your desktop computer (i.e. Outlook) and mobile phones.

Currently, I'm using a first-gen Samsung Blackjack running Windows Mobile 5 for my personal phone. It is a horrible device, and Windows Mobile is a horrible OS for a phone. But that's another conversation. Google conveniently allows for syncing my phone via ActiveSync, a product for the Windows Mobile OS.

So I setup a calendar using my wife's Google account, and sync both my phone and her phone to it. So now that we are sharing the same calendar, every appointment I make and every appointment she makes are seen on both devices. In addition, I shared her calendar with my Google account, so I can view/add/edit appointments using the web interface.

Pretty cool, huh?
