I went to DrupalCamp Austin this past week, and let me just say... awesome. There were some great speeches, some cool tools, and some awesome learning going on.
My two favorite classes were the keynote speeches by far. Saturday's keynote gave an interesting viewpoint on finding your Drupal-based niche within business. Using examples like lullabots, Volacci, and Mustard Seed Media, Ben Finklea spoke about how finding a niche is what makes a business hit their growth spurts, especially if you are the first or best to do it. Sunday's keynote was given on cloud computing, and how to harness the awesome powers when designing Drupal-based sites. Seeing a virtual server be built off an image boot up and run Apache and a custom Drupal install in less than three minutes was just plain cool.
The most interesting aspect of DCA was the types of classes being offered. While there was some definite Drupal learning going on, most of the classes were about building your business. Expecting more technical talk, this struck me as odd, but in a good way. The main focus was obviously Drupal, but in a close second was building a business.
So, I've got some great ideas and a better thought process going forward: do one thing, and do it well. For me? Drupal.
